Why we built it

Built from inside a barrister's practice.

Cindy Zoons is a legal assistant to two barristers in Cork. Every week she watched them dictate their thoughts on the walk back from court — then spend their evenings typing the same words into attendance notes, fee notes, and letters.

"Every week I watched them dictate on the walk from court, then spend the evening typing the same words into attendance notes."

— Cindy Zoons, Legal Assistant, Cork

James Harnedy is a software engineer with thirty years of experience — most recently VP Engineering at Keelvar, a Cork AI company. He built the tool Cindy described. dictate& isn't a generic AI product adapted for law — it came directly from inside the profession.

"Fee note for Smith v Jones, it's the High Court matter, the motion for discovery was on the twelfth of March. I was there three and a half hours. Reviewed the brief and pleadings the night before, probably an hour and a half. I drafted the affidavit of discovery myself — that took about two hours. Rate's five hundred an hour."

FAQ

Common questions

What does dictate& actually do?

You speak into your phone after a meeting, consultation, or session. dictate& transcribes what you said and formats it into a proper document — an attendance note, a brief, session notes, whatever you need. You review it, make any edits by voice, and send it. No typing.

Who is it for?

Barristers and solicitors in Ireland and the UK. The AI knows Irish legal terminology, case citations, Latin terms, and handles Irish accents and names, so it gets the words right the first time and formats the output the way you'd actually write it.

Why not just use the dictation on my phone?

Phone dictation gives you a wall of unformatted text that you still have to tidy up. dictate& gives you a structured document — headings, paragraphs, the right format for the document type. It also knows professional terminology, so "Griffith v Minister" doesn't come out as gibberish.

Where is my data stored?

Everything stays in the EU. No data goes to the US or anywhere outside the EU. If you're dealing with client-privileged material or patient data, that matters.

Do I need IT to set it up?

No. There's nothing to install on a computer. You sign up on your phone, dictate, and get your first document back in minutes. No procurement, no training, no IT ticket.

Does it work without signal?

Yes. You can record offline — walking back from court, between sessions, wherever. The audio sits on your phone until you have signal, then it gets transcribed.

Can I use it for something other than voice?

Yes. As well as voice, you can photograph a handwritten note or a document with your camera — the AI extracts the text and processes it through the same pipeline. You can also type directly if you prefer. All three modes produce the same structured output.

Where do my documents go?

Every document is saved in your account and organised into folders — by matter, client, or document type. You can share a workspace with a secretary or colleague so they have access to the same files and tasks.
